My Mirfield recently asked the residents of Mirfield what they thought of a Tesco Express opening in Mirfield. It was a mixed response but the vast majority of Mirfield residents chose to say No to Tesco.

The results of the My Mirfield Tesco poll

YES Mirfield does need a Tesco 23% (99 votes)

NO Mirfield does not need a Tesco 77% (323 votes)

Tesco has now opened its Express store on the site of the Black Bull on Huddersfield Road in Mirfield but that doesnt mean you have to shop there. So for all those that said no to Tesco in Mirfield remember to keep shopping at your local Mirfield shops and asking for your loyalty points.

LIBRARIES, markets and gritting are just some of the services facing big cuts locally.

Kirklees Council has revealed how it plans to save £80m in the next four years.

It has said only £30m of this can be saved by efficiencies, so it has ‘no choice’ but to cut front-line services too.

In a series of documents explaining where savings could be made, the council says it will review the affordability of all libraries and possibly get communities to help run them to cut costs.

The council plans to cut the spending on support for children in need and gritting roads in winter.

It suggests reducing the service offered by children’s centres, asking them to concentrate on providing for the families in greatest need.

It will consider keeping council parking charges at the same level to boost local trade – but this would mean it could no longer afford to give free parking to the disabled in its car parks.

The council would plant fewer flowers in our parks and open spaces and consider closing some public toilets.

It will also reconsider its subsidies for local markets, concentrating its money on those in Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

The public are being asked for their opinions on the ideas being put forward, before councillors decide where exactly the axe will fall.

Anyone wanting to add their thoughts to the public consultation can email consultation@kirklees.gov.uk.

The council has also set out a number of ways it can run more efficiently.

Redundancies and a restructuring of senior management is expected to save money, as is a new IT system and the closure of all but one housing office.

The council also says it owns too many buildings so it will reduce the number of offices it runs. It will consider selling off buildings and land to the community.

Adrian Lythgo, chief executive of Kirklees Council, said: “There is no escaping the fact that all councils are having to make major decisions about the way they spend dwindling resources.

“These are unprecedented times in local government. The cuts in funding are very significant and are going to have an impact both on the way we operate and the way we support communities.

“Today we are publishing an overview of options which are up for discussion. As they are not firm plans, the figures are very much subject to change.

“But cutbacks are unavoidable – and, in some cases, they are being forced on us very quickly – so councillors will face some tough choices over the next few weeks.”

A DEVELOPMENT plan for the next 15 years in Mirfield was up for discussion this week.

Kirklees Council wants to build 1,075 new homes in the town. Of that, 601 are already planned on brownfield sites, and 227 are already planned for greenfield sites.

Under its Local Development Framework (LDF) plans, the council needs to find greenfield sites to build the remaining 247 homes. But none will be built on greenbelt land.

The council has also earmarked 50 hectares of greenbelt land for business development at Cooper Bridge, which has caused uproar among Roberttown people because of extra traffic from new busineses coming through the village.

The council must also find 11 hectares on greenfield land for new sites.

The plans were outlined at Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton Town and Valley Committee on Tuesday at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Head of planning, Jacqui Gedman, said the LDF proposals were chosen from a set of four put out to public consultation in 2009.

She said a booklet outlining the LDF plans had been posted out to homes – but a show of hands revealed many people had not received them.

She said: “This is a 15-year plan – it’s not going to happen overnight.

“We need your comments on the proposals to help us put together the core strategy.”

The core strategy will be put together during the summer and would be followed by a six week objection period. Then the plans would be submitted for independent examination by a planning inspector before being decided by full council, she added.

People have until February 13 to comment on the proposals.

Coun Kath Taylor (Con, Mirfield) said Kirklees had been looking at land off Balderstone Hall Lane and on the corner of Dunbottle Lane and Flash Lane for housing development.

She said: “Some green belt land in Mirfield would be better for development than Balderstone, which is well used.” • What do you think? Are the plans fair? E-mail Lauren Ballinger on l.ballinger@ywng.co.uk or write to The Reporter, Wellington Road, Dewsbury, WF13 1HQ
